Picket fences have a classic look that not only encloses your yard, offering privacy and safety, but also add beauty to your home. There are kits available to build a picket fence, but they're really not that hard to build from scratch. That way, you can design them exactly the way you want, plus you can tell everyone who compliments your fence that you did it yourself!
The first step is to visualize the end result. Are you planning to completely enclose your yard? Do you know where you want to put one or more gates? Do you need to bury chicken wire or mesh below the fence to avoid small animals getting in?
These are the types of decisions you'll need to make before you decide on the style and how much material you will need.
Next, measure the area that you're going to be enclosing with your fence. The type of materials you decide on can also have a bearing on the size of the fence, and you should always plan to buy a bit more than you need in case of mistakes or other problems. Pickets and the rails they're mounted on can sometimes split when you nail them together.
Once you've got your measurements worked out, you'll need to decide on the type of material you're going to use. For picket fences, you've got two primary choices - wood or vinyl.
Vinyl has its advantages, but it's not a material that you'll be able to design yourself. Vinyl picket fences typically come in pre-made sections that you simply put together. You can even paint vinyl, but in the end you're going to have less control and choice over what it looks like.
As for wood, there are several species that work well for picket fences. Red cedar is a popular choice, as is white pine. The color and grain pattern of the wood isn't critical, since you can always stain or paint it anyway.
Now, let's get onto the actual building of your fence.
2x4 boards make good rails, or cross-members, to support your pickets. Eight foot boards are perfect for enclosing larger areas, and still provide plenty of strength. You can saw them if you need shorter lengths.
Lay two rails on the ground and place the desired number of pickets on them at right angles. You can adjust the spacing, depending on your needs, but they are usually four to six inches apart. Just keep in mind that if you have pets, kids, or something else to keep in the yard you'll want to ensure they're close enough together to stop them from squeezing through. Use a T-square to ensure they are at the correct angle relative to the rails.
Next, nail or screw the pickets to the rails. Finishing nails tend to look nicer, but they won't hold as well. Four penny (4d) - 1 1/2 inch - nails will be about the right length.
Once you have a section of the fence assembled, attach L-braces at each end to attach to the posts. For most fences, posts are the corners and every eight feet will be enough for a sturdy fence.
