Garden Fencing – Did You Get Ripped off By The Garden Fence Spraying TV Ad?

Anybody with a tv must have at one time or another seen the advertisement for the garden fence spraying kit that sprays their entire garden fencing whilst the poor stupid neighbor tries to paint one garden fence panel with a brush.

The Amazing Garden Fence Spray Kit
Lots of ads sometimes fail to hit their target and convey the message but not this one. The message was incredibly simple in that I would save loads of time if I used this garden fence spray kit on my garden fencing. Given that the advertisement and the product was from a well know brand leader I immediately concluded that it was an excellent idea and that I would invest in the kit to repaint my garden fence in late summer.
A few weeks later I made a trip to my local B&Q had a look at the spray kit and within half and hour I had a hundred pounds of kit and preservatives in my car. I suppose I should have spotted something wasn’t quite right when the sales assistant offered me an extended guarantee on the product claiming that the product guarantee only lasted 1 month. I know I didn’t pay much attention to what she was saying but in hindsight I know I should have done.
It was a few months later when I got the kit out to actually spray some new panels and the old ones. I had a reasonable look at the instructions and got on with spraying a few panels in my garage. At this point I would say that I was more or less content in that the panel was sprayed quickly but on the downside there was a lot of overspray not entirely the fault of the kit as this is common in spraying anything but it was excessive as the preservite really was pumped out quickly.
The problems occurred when the container ran out of preservative and the gun started spitting. Despite a refill the gun was clearly not working properly. After several attempts and at least three drain downs I managed to get it going again although by this time I had now spent over two hours and had only successfully sprayed 1 side of to panels. Clearly I would have been much quicker with a brush.
Eventually I completed the remaining few panels in my garage and headed to the garden with a full load to start spraying the fixed panels.
After about 20 seconds I had to stop because I had two huge problems, the spray was going everywhere and going all over the plants. That was bad enough but I was getting spray back residue all over my clothes and face. By the time I had sprayed one whole panel I was covered in spray. It was all over my hands, face, in my hair, on my watch and of course my shirt, pant and pants were ruined. ( I don’t remember this happening in the tv ad)
Before you think I’m stupid here I can tell you that I have done quite a bit of commercial spraying including outdoor spraying. I’m aware that any wind can cause problems but I still wasn’t expecting this amount of mess given the prevailing weather conditions.
By the time I got halfway down the second panel I had covered almost all of me and almost every plant below me in spray, this was about the time the gun started spitting again but the container wasn’t empty this time, it was blocked.
On and off over the weekend I spent about another four or five hours cleaning, dismantling, recharging and attempting to get this amazing spray kit to work again and the result was always the same.
I had destroyed my clothes, ruined some beautiful plants and made a huge mess in my garden and garage. I had invested about eight or nine hours into the project, spent over a £100 and had one side of three and a half panels done.
The more I thought about what a useless product this was the more annoyed I got. I was remembering the tv advertisement and how easy it was and I realized I had been conned with possibly the worst product I had ever purchased in my life.
The following weekend I got my paint brush out, painted the remaining panels without destroying my garden plants or myself in the process. As for the amazing spray kit it went in the bin and I made a mental note to avoid being sucked in so easy in the future.
Conclusion
There is only one way to treat fence panels that have been installed and that is to get the paint brush out and do it the proper way. Common sense will tell you that spraying will go all over the plants, into your neighbor’s garden and in general will create a huge mess.
