If you are planning to build a wood fence, the most difficult part is in the installation of the vertical fence post. If the fence post is not properly installed, then it will reduce the life of the fence, and it might also lean a little to the side. Although installing fence post might seem like a labor intensive project requiring a lot of time and patience, in reality this is not true. There are myriad varieties of pre-made fences which are available in the market as well as kits to help you in fence post installation. Read on wooden fences.
Here is a guide on step by step installation of fence post. The first step in fence post installation is to be aware where your lot lines are. Once you have determined your lot lines, mark your area by placing a stake in each corner of the lot. Now tie a string on all the four stakes and make sure that when you are installing the fence post, you stay inside the area. Depending on the type of terrain and fence you are going to build, dig holes around 6 to 8 inches apart on the ground with the help of a post hole digger. Then set install the end of the fence post into the hole that you have just dug. Now mark the ground in a straight line along the fence post so that you have an idea as to where the next post should be installed. Keep in mind that the appearance as well as the structural strength of your fence depends upon the positioning of the fence post. Read on chain link fence installation.
The next step in fence post installation is the setting of the fence post. At least one third of the total length of the fence post should be buried under the ground to get maximum stability. This rule is especially important on corner posts which need to bear heavy weight as well as withstand high winds. The posts can be made more stable by making the holes slightly larger at the top than at the bottom of the post. After installing the fence post, place sufficient amount of gravel in each hole. This is a very good way of ensuring that the base of the fence post does not rot due to excessive moisture. Now apply a wood preservative to the section of the fence post that will remain below the ground. For best results, allow the preservative to remain overnight. Make sure that all the fence posts are in an exact straight line by looking from one end of the row of fence posts to the other. You can also check the alignment of each individual fence post by using a plumb line. Now pack the fence post with concrete and hold it in position until the concrete sets thoroughly. When the fence post is standing upright and is in perfect position, build a mound around its base with concrete. While making the mound, slope the concrete a little away from the fence post and then tamp the concrete to get rid of any air bubbles. Add bracing on all the fence posts and provide extra bracing on the corner posts as they withstand maximum pressure. The top of the fence posts should be capped or rounded to ensure that it lasts fir a longer time. Lastly allow the fence posts to stand for a few days before you install the fence.
