When it comes to garden fencing using timber fence panels is a quick, convenient and affordable way to fence off your garden. Fence panels and how you use the panels can set off the best aspects of your garden or if you make a poor choice can provide disappointment every time your eye catches them.
Fence panels tend to be standard widths of approximately 6ft, so renewing fence panels at a later date is easy. Panel heights also tend to be standard going in 1ft increments from 3ft high through to 6ft high as a rule.
Fitting fence panels is straight forward, they can either be nailed to timber posts or slotted between concrete slotted posts. The only slight problem with installing fence panels is that on sloping ground the rigid panels have to be stepped down the slope so the top of the fence isn't a flowing line, more a series of steps.
If you are operating on a tight budget the cheapest option will be a lower height panel fence mounted on timber posts. The lower height will reduce your privacy and in all likelihood the timber fence posts will rot at ground level before a concrete fence post would, but you will get a serviceable fence that will give you a good many years service.
In the world of fence panels the most inexpensive variant of panel tends to be the waney edge panel. This is typically a lighter weight panel constructed with thin horizontal boards with a framed surround to the panel and a capping rail to finish off. These panels, once damaged are non to easy to repair and generally need replacing in their entirety. The sawn timber is generally dip treated.
For a sturdier fence panel that may be repaired if damaged at a later date you are probably best off going for an overlap panel, or feather edge panel. These are constructed with wedge profiled boards hanging vertically down the panel. Surround rails and bracing rails to the rear of the panel, as well as the improved thickness of the boards, make this type of panel stronger and more durable that waney edge panels and you will find this is reflected in the price. These panels can be fitted to either concrete or timber posts with concrete posts offering a truly durable fence. Overlap panels can often be found as either dip treated or tanalised, with tanalised timber offering the best protection from rot giving a rot free life of at least 15 years. Overlap panels can cost twice as much as waney edge panels, but this is reflected in the amount of timber used to construct the panel and it's resulting strength.
If you are after a top of the line panel fence then there are wide ranges of european style decorative fence panels on the market. These tend to constructed with horizontal boards in a hit and miss style with solid surround framework, diagonal board layout or vertical board layout giving interesting textures and patterning. The tops of the panels are usually in-filled with lattice trellis work and can come with a wavy domed top, concave trellis top or straight trellis with choices of diamond or square pattern trellis. These panels are highly decorative and sturdy and generally cost twice as much as overlap panels but offer a high degree of classy decoration to your garden.
Whichever panel and post system you use a fence panel fence will give you good service with ease of installation and replacement at a later date, offering potential for improved privacy and substantial decoration to your garden.
